English 9 Class Notes

Objective: Freshmen identified and explained plot elements in a short story.

The above was the objective, though we only touched upon is implicitly as we discussed the rising action of the encounter between Rainsford and Zaroff. What occupied us mostly was the the former’s realization that the latter hunts humans. And I asked you several questions engendered by this revelation: Is it right to kill others? What is the value of human life? Who makes the “rules”? Indeed, what are the rules, that is, how should we treat each other, or how should we live? Open-ended, existential questions such as these will be a part of our regular discussions over the literature we read. The answers may seem obvious, but behind them are certain assumptions about life and existence that inform our responses and I want you to examine your own closely. I hope to frustrate you often.

See you Wednesday.
